THE ON MISSION WARRIOR (10 of 12)

Continuing our year-end series on “The On Mission Warrior”…check our previous posts for the first nine below if you missed them!

TEN (10 of 12): As I learn and grow, I will lead, teach and mobilize others to grow in their journey as On Mission Warriors.

“…and what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also.” (2 Timothy 2:2, ESV)

“For Ezra had set his heart to study the Law of the Lord, and to do it and to teach his statutes and rules in Israel.” (Ezra 7:10, ESV)

One of the things I love about martial arts training is that, done properly, it is so much more than “getting a good workout” and “learning self-defense.” The rank structure of martial arts and the systematic curriculum in many dojos allows for the possibility of excellent leadership training and development. In fact, when I first received the vision for OMMA from the Lord, one of the things that excited me the most was the possibility of using the structure of a martial arts program for intentional and systematic leadership and spiritual development.

In the Dojo we often refer to the concept of LEARN – DO – TEACH. First, you learn something new – maybe a new self-defense technique, a new drill to develop speed, or a spiritual concept. Next, you spend time practicing and training this new thing you have learned, to begin to internalize it. Once you have reached a certain level of proficiency, we will have the student teach (under the supervision of a higher-ranking leader), another student what they have learned and practiced themselves. Inevitably, in the process of teaching something, the teacher learns something new about what they are teaching, which moves them back to the first step in a repeating cycle of LEARN – DO – TEACH!

Often, students have the goal of earning a First Degree Black Belt. In reality, that’s when the martial arts journey is just beginning! Part of the heritage of martial arts is faithfully passing down what you’ve learned from your instructors on to your students and also ensuring that they are teaching their students well. Again, the spiritual parallel to our walk with Christ is so evident. In the 2 Timothy verse above, as well as the Ezra verse, we see the very same principle in application. At OMMA we say that our faith is “Personal, not private.” We are instructed by our Lord to pass what He has taught us through those spiritual leaders in our lives on to the next “generation” of Christ-followers and ensure they are doing the same.

May the Lord cause us to shine His light bright and not hide it under a bushel (Mark 4:21-22)!

Matthew 5:16 (NASB) “Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.”
