Randori is a Japanese term used in the martial arts to describe practice with a partner or partners, where skills are typically applied against free-style or random attacks. At OMMA, we use Randori in four different contexts: Sparring. Groundfighting, Reaction Drills, and Scenario Training.

Sparring is the standing, striking version of free-form combat practice. We utilize rules and protective gear to minimize the chances of injury during sparring training. Some martial arts utilize “point” sparring to prepare for tournaments, but at OMMA we prefer “continuous” sparring where we don’t stop when we get a strike in, but work on controlled follow-up. This is done both for realistic training in preparation for street combat as well as because it is a better workout!

Here’s an example of some sparring!
